Supporting quick progression
A bricklayer as a teenager, Sean has always been hands on and practical. He first experienced working alongside Mar-Key Group on the docks of Southampton last year and immediately felt that our team was one he wanted to be part of; ‘I was attracted to the professionalism of the site teams and the company’.
Backed by the Team
Joining the business as a Level 1 Erector in January 2024 and having only been with us a short time, within just 6 months he was promoted to a Level 2 Erector. Our structured, achievable progression paths are something we’re really proud of. Any business can say they offer progression, but we show our team the route, they tell us where they want to be, and we help them get there.
Sean hasn’t always worked within construction though. He spent more than 8 years of his career in the NHS working in a secure mental health unit. His problem-solving mentality and hard working attitude translates across his roles, and has enabled him to achieve such a quick promotion.
Talking of what else helped him achieve this, Sean added ‘You have full support from your Foreman on site. Everyone is so willing to help and pass their knowledge and skills on to you, you’ve just got to be willing to watch and listen… and don’t be afraid of asking questions!’
Sean’s already been at multiple sites around the country and names Ascot Racecourse as his favourite build site so far: ‘It’s the scale of it! It was my first time on a multi-tiered structure so there was a lot to learn.’
Communication is Key
The life as a member of our Site Team is not for the faint hearted – It’s physically demanding and requires a lot of travel. ‘The hardest part of it all is being away from home and my family. It has its ups and downs but my best advice is to communicate. There are so many avenues to better yourself at Mar-Key Group and the team is so supportive. From the office to your site team and the management, you’re well looked after and part of one big team and you feed off the positivity of everyone else.’
